To let our staff celebrate the holiday with their families, we will be closing early at 5:00pm on Wednesday, November 23rd, and we will be closed both Thursday, November 24th and Friday, November 25th. In last week’s paper, we listed that we would be closed on Saturday, but in order to accommodate many of our patrons who want to bring their visiting families through the new library over the weekend, we will now be open on Saturday, November 26th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. You may want to plan on attending one of our tours that day – offered at 11:00am and again at 12:00pm. We are happy that you want to show family and friends our beautiful new Springville Library!
Are you looking for some new reading ideas? The following is a list of some of our new books by popular authors:
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Inheritance by Christopher Paolini
The Death Cure by James Dashner
The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks
The Christmas Wedding by James Patterson
Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly
The Land of Painted Caves by Jean Auel
The Greater Journey by David McCullough
The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan
Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick

During this Thanksgiving time, we want to express our gratitude to everyone in Springville for your support during our construction and move. Thank you to the many Springville City employees who donated their time during the last minute flurry as we prepared to open. And a big “Thank You” all of our volunteers who donate countless hours in mending, shelving, sorting, and labeling books. We have been open for almost a month now, and we love our new facility and the opportunity it gives us to better serve our entire community. Whether you have already been in many times, or you are visiting for the first time, we would love to see you soon. Come and look at our Christmas decorations, explore our quiet reading nooks, attend one of our programs, stock up on some reading materials, and enjoy our calm and peaceful surroundings.
Until next week….Happy Reading!

“Not what we say about our blessings,
but how we use them,
is the true measure of our thanksgiving”
– W.T. Have you heard who is coming? ….Brandon Mull! - author of the much loved Fablehaven and Beyonders series! Make sure you mark all of the following information on your calendar. You won’t want to miss our Grand Opening events:

Springville Public Library Grand Opening
Saturday, October 29th
Ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:30am
Family Activities and Fun planned throughout the day!
Fablehaven author Brandon Mull will be speaking at 2:00pm and 3:00pm
After these two sessions, Brandon will be signing books
(Books will be available for purchase or you may bring your own)

Have you seen all the commotion at the new library building over the last few weeks? We have been busy moving from our old building (which has faithfully served all of our community for 46 years), into our new building. In fact, we had a great crew of volunteers helping us make this transition. October 4th, 5th, & 6th were our big moving days when most of the contents of the library changed buildings. In addition to the groups who came in and helped with the move, we want to recognize our regular group of volunteers who have been helping at the library on an on-going basis. They have mended books, done shelving and labeling, and helped with the huge task of adding the new security tags to each item in the library. We want to tell all of our wonderful volunteers “THANK YOU!!” We rely on these hard-working helpers for many projects. They do an amazing job!
Please remember that we will be closed for a few more weeks as we finish moving and getting everything ready for the Grand Opening. While we remain closed, all the items that you currently have checked out keep the regular loan periods. Our drive up book drop in the new library building is now open, and you may return any materials there. You may also renew items online here at our website www.springvillelibrary.org. If you haven’t tried accessing your account online, give it a try. On our homepage, type in your library card number (the long number under the barcode on your library card) and pin (usually the last four digits of your phone number). It is a great way to see what you have out and renew and reserve items also. While we are closed, you will be able to place holds on books and fill out inter-library loan requests as usual. These requests will be processed one week before we reopen on October 29th and can be picked up at the new library during the Grand Opening (or shortly thereafter, depending on availability).
If you currently have a library card, rest assured that this card will still work at the new library. If you don’t have a card and are interested in getting one, go back to our homepage at www.springvillelibrary.org. In the left-hand column, there is a tab entitled “apply for a library card”. Fill this short form out and then when we reopen, bring in photo ID and proof of Springville address (examples include a utility bill, a post office delivered envelope, mortgage or lease document, bank statement, etc) to finish the process and pick up your card.

July 7

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7qHOan6CDbA/ThZLReaHtLI/AAAAAAAAAKk/iqidbPXmSxw/s320/1068.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626767548038493362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cWsgFnzEuzc/ThZLL_IbEtI/AAAAAAAAAKc/UYXeQz32U64/s320/1067.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626767453743420114" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6dJ6We8OuEQ/ThZLG43LN8I/AAAAAAAAAKU/i5wcBDm7MW4/s320/1054.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626767366161119170" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b7-UPtsnqbU/ThZLBnOoyeI/AAAAAAAAAKM/dgsGyvz6o1I/s320/1046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626767275528341986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Oux8r7a_UoA/ThZK8EA2xnI/AAAAAAAAAKE/Lor5AG9V5E4/s320/1035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626767180175951474" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q2citLxncI0/ThZK3Mc-QSI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/r19oEdOcERQ/s320/1019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5626767096542019874" />
We have been hearing many positive comments on the library as details and finishes become more apparent. The site is cut to rough grade and sidewalks and curb in on Center and 1st South are in place. Fire suppression is finished and elevators are in and waiting for inspection. Wall and floor tiles are in on all restrooms.

Brick and stone is in place. Masons are finishing calking and sealing of stone. Lights were delivered last week and Highland Electric continues to pull wires in preparation for installing fixtures. Exterior glass is in place. Insulation in both rotundas is complete as is the barrel roof. Framework for interior finishing of rotunda domes is currently being done. Much of library is painted in preparation for radiant ceiling panel placement. Cabinets and built-in shelving will begin next week as will installation of main stair treads.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JqQwovOFD3o/Tb89s15QNwI/AAAAAAAAAJo/FFmyzzG5cEI/s320/lib%2Bpic%2Bapril%2B013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602264302062941954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MRZOJX0aX1g/Tb89nJw790I/AAAAAAAAAJg/xl-PmqUUyQ0/s320/lib%2Bpic%2Bapril%2B015.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602264204317554498" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_GJ9KuvvVyQ/Tb884Tv0lkI/AAAAAAAAAJY/Thg10UTcfGs/s320/lib%2Bpic%2Bapril%2B018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602263399543379522" />
Construction Update April 29, 2011
Springville residents are getting a real feel of how the new library will look. Construction crews have set glass windows on most of the building (that is glazing in construction terms—glass set or made to be set in frames), gyp board is up in much of the 1st and 2nd floors, and framing, with the exception of interior columns, will be finished this week. The roofers have needed 3 consecutive good days to finish the domes. With 21 out of 29 days in April receiving rain or snow, this has been an unusually difficult feat.
The final load of limestone has arrived from Indiana so the brick and stone masons have moved to finish off the southwest wall and the south rotunda. The motor for the partition that drops from the ceiling in the multipurpose room to allow for division is in place. The interior main stair is up, but not in use, and the elevators will arrive the first of next week.
On the inside, crews are still working on insulation while some electrical and plumbing work continues. The soffits and ceilings levels throughout the first floor are starting to take shape. Our architect, JRCA, has done an amazing job in making the interior space both definable and interesting with varied heights, curves, and lighting.
A few quick facts:
• Each of the 15 counter weights on the tower crane weighs 2,715 lbs. with a total counterbalance of 40,725 lbs.
• Each of the large limestone slabs weighs approximately 800 lbs.
• All of the mechanical elements such as fans, heating, and cooling which are often seen on roofs will be housed in the basement to prevent damage from the elements.
• The heating uses a displacement system which is more efficient than a typical system that blows heat down. It heats only the lower 8 ft. Radiant heating panels in the ceiling assist this process.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TUyJE9s6EtI/AAAAAAAAAI4/TXZn2wo5qeQ/s320/DSCF0391.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569977557525861074" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TUyI74qGyfI/AAAAAAAAAIw/gRM_TI69Rrw/s320/DSCF0389.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569977401553111538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TUyIzfgik-I/AAAAAAAAAIo/DLST2ctdWg8/s320/DSCF0387.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569977257363149794" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TUyIrkpkDEI/AAAAAAAAAIg/cKlAk32AjfE/s320/DSCF0378.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569977121304218690" />

We can look to a fall opening for the new library. Construction workers are currently focusing on getting the roof on. Although the basic structure is in place, workers are plugging openings to with the goal of enclosing the building’s roof.
The first shipment of limestone, approximately 40,000 lbs., arrived last week from an Indiana quarry. Stone masons will begin setting stone on the high roof line of the east side of the building. The south east side is currently covered in plastic to hold in the heat as insulation is applied and masons lay the brick in that area. The brick is in multi-toned browns similar to several homes found along Center St. east of Main. This brick will compliment the red tones selected for the Civic Center and Fire Station while connecting the library to the environment created by Hobble Creek and the mountains.
The south rotunda is place. This forms the main entrance so as patrons park they are not entering the library from the side or back of the building.
Miscellaneous structural steel and exterior framing is going on so walls can be completed. Continued mechanical, plumbing, and sprinkler work is evident. The north rotunda has been moved and will be set at the same time the columns go up to hold that structure. Steel framing for the clerestory windows on the west are finished. The area on the west will house the children’s collection. The high windows will let in additional natural lighting and afford the opportunity for varied ceiling heights in the interior.

Construction on the library has benefited from the extended good weather through most of December. Today’s heavy snowfall was the first day that welders, due to the mix of electrical arcs and water, and most of the construction workers, due to safety issues, had to take a break.

Steel columns are in place for both rotundas and most of the roof joists are set which now provide us with a clearer view of what the building will look like. Concrete has been set on the second level, work on plumbing and heating lines continues, and electrical floor boxes are in place. The north stairs are in which will allow access to staff offices and work room.

So far, my favorite part of the building is the ceilings in the children’s/youth area on the west side. Because the west side of the building is one-story, it allowed the architect to vary the ceiling heights. The children’s area opens in to an elevated arched ceiling with clerestory windows that lead in to the even further elevated corner rotunda. The play of height and incoming natural light will make this a very inviting area.

Nov. 22, 2010

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TPkei7oglXI/AAAAAAAAAH4/uJZPm9Pf6tw/s320/Dec3c" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546498001555461490" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TPkedsadqtI/AAAAAAAAAHw/vdjmho9slP8/s320/Dec3b" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546497911570672338" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TPkeB3tw0iI/AAAAAAAAAHo/HC8tzuLAl9c/s320/Dec.%2B3a.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546497433568072226" />
The new library is beginning to be defined with perimeter foundations, the addition of steel columns and beams and placing the concrete slab for the main floor. Weather conditions have allowed the workers to set the last 100 yards of concrete on the south so the remaining slab on grade was completed last week. Conduits for power and internet and heating and cooling ducts are in place for the basement and first floor.
92% of the second floor deck is in place. Welding continues on the second level. Each of the tall steel columns weigh approximately 1,800 lbs. It is a visual treat to watch crane operators and construction crews working in tandem to set columns and stabilize them with the supporting beams.
Last Friday, the crane began moving in roof supports and crews will begin to arrange for the concrete that will become the second level on the east side. Libraries require extra shoring due to the highly compacted weight of the books on their shelving. A typical office building may require a load limit of 50 lbs per square foot where a library requires 150 lbs. per square foot.
Architectural drawings are shown in the Library and Civic Center lobbies.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TMYGsA41jHI/AAAAAAAAAHg/qX4bTQX8d8Y/s320/DSCF0230.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532116545493634162" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TMYGl18CYoI/AAAAAAAAAHY/caHxcb5pXfQ/s320/DSCF0227.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532116439475053186" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TMYGePYp0qI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/A2M5_MER8Jo/s320/DSCF0222.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532116308867011234" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TMYGX8vOsyI/AAAAAAAAAHI/XFVNO2VRsTw/s320/DSCF0217.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532116200782213922" />
Construction on the new library site is definitely looking more vertical this week. Five truckloads of steel and roofing and floor joists were unloaded on the secondary site which is the east side of Hobble Creek. Loads have been broken down and are being moved to the west to sequence in the construction project. A crane arrived on Tuesday and has been assisting in setting columns and beams. This work begins on the east side of the project.

Elevator shafts have topped out at 32 ft., heating and cooling ducts are under slab and work with under slab electric cable lines continues. Main Street curb and gutter work is 80% complete. The sidewalk along Main has been removed to allow future forklifts to bring in needed brick and stone for the exterior. Deck on basement is complete. The building perimeter concrete is now fully visible.

For all those who have been asking, the library is scheduled to be completed in July 2011.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 210px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TLN7yohz1TI/AAAAAAAAAHA/B98MgQrOISk/s320/Springville-Library-Site-2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5526897277516633394" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TKoOiDVORwI/AAAAAAAAAGo/HTQzzIPDknY/s320/pipe.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524243871095998210" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TKoOKE-W8nI/AAAAAAAAAGg/Q9y8GC8VlEc/s320/scaffold.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524243459220107890" />
October 1, 2010

The library site is looking very different this week. Concrete walls and basement flooring are complete, waterproofing of that area is finished, and the area has been backfilled. This allows for more maneuverability on site, more workers, and so more progress.

B.D. Jones has completed demolition of the buildings on Main and 1st South. This eliminates the need for a vehicle bridge to span Hobble for previously needed parking. Patrons will now have parking and walking access to the building without having to cross the water. This change also affords a higher profile seen from the south.

Spot footings are poured, east and north storm drains are in, under slab plumbing is going in, under slab floor ducts have been set, and elevator shafts are up to six feet. If you walk around the perimeter fence you can see the outline of the building footprint and imagine the increased visibility of the new library. The Art Museum may no longer get visitors stopping by thinking the museum must be where the library is too.

Behind the scenes, exterior masonry and stone have been evaluated and ordered, landscape modifications have been made since there is no longer a need for a traffic bridge, electrical plans are being reviewed, and librarians are working with the architect and interior designer on shelving, millwork, bathrooms, floorings and fixtures.

I’ve been asked to include a site plan that shows the landscaping around the building. The attached drawing shows the building, parking, and landscape on the west side of the creek. The city has purchased property on the east side of Hobble Creek, adjacent to the credit union which, at this point, will have grass and sprinklers with an option for a future park.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/THQLSYYqyiI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/hs_yZUO7-3U/s320/DSCF0136.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509040654592428578" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/THQLN-nsNJI/AAAAAAAAAGI/z5IpMHG7HLI/s320/DSCF0133.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509040578956637330" />

It has been a busy week at the library site with concrete transport trucks arriving to finish setting basement walls. The basement will house the heating and cooling systems of the building and house some of the IT equipment.
The contractors are keeping on schedule and are doing a fantastic job. Utilities have been roughed in in the basement, stem wall transition and automated handling system footings are being set, and large rock and debris are being moved off site. The handling system is part of equipment that will automatically and immediately check in and sort materials as patrons return them. It will enable customers to see if their cards are clear and if any items need to be renewed. There is continued review and approving of shop drawings for fabrication of the structural steel components including columns, beams, joists and steel decking.
Springville is lucky to be building in this economic climate. Not only is it employing a significant number of tradesmen, we have the good fortune to be working with some of the best architects and constructions companies in this part of the country.
Although the building will be funded through the 2008 library bond, the library is in need of donations to purchase computers and other up-to-date technology, new books and audio/visual materials, and part of the furnishings. Individual, family, and business donations make a very significant difference in the quality of materials and services when a new library is being built.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TGXQivNIM6I/AAAAAAAAAFw/SWjYO3YDPXA/s320/61024+-+8.07.10+-+Building+Gang+Forms+For+Basement+Walls+(1).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505035414735958946" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TGXQeYv0QvI/AAAAAAAAAFo/SG2rTMvYtp8/s320/7.22.10+-+Forming+Basement+Footing+On+C.9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505035339987960562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7W-f8hAUPVI/TGXQILQ2W5I/AAAAAAAAAFg/wjODvBNm0b4/s320/7.20.10+-+Checking+Grade+In+Basement.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505034958411291538" />
August 12, 2010
This afternoon approximately 140 yds. of concrete was trucked to the site as two basement walls were set. This seems like a milestone to me.
You can observe continued screening of the dirt to take out large rocks in preparation to backfill the basement and set the stage for the main floor of the building. Sewer and underground plumbing is complete, a sorter tunnel dug for future equipment that will automatically check in and sort materials as patrons return them, the west elevator pit is formed and digging is being done to allow for north/south power lines to be lowered and placed underground.
The construction tasks are very visible at this juncture so it is a good time for those who like big trucks and equipment to get a close-up view of how things are done. Construction is on schedule.
Library News: Children’s programming begins in September. We just received a large order of new fiction material so an excellent selection will be on the floor in a few days. Thanks to all of you, and especially our high school youth council, who made up a successful summer reading program. More than twice as many residents participated this year! Keep on reading.

construction updates

July 20, 2010
Westside of basement excavation is complete. Excavation of site to lay supports is being finished in main building area. The waterline from building to Center St. has been connected and is functioning. Concrete crews have visited the site and pre-tying of rebar for footings has begun.
The property site has been expanded to include the entire block area south of the proposed building. Work in that area will begin the first week of August. Power lines will be dropped and buried along the north south line along Hobble Creek. Fiber lines will also be moved to the east side of lot so they are out of the parking lot area.
Drawings for expanded parking lot and improved access to the drive-up drop box are complete and waiting final approval. This project is finally feeling real.

July 1, 2010
Existing basement is being backfilled. Excavation of the partial basement , which will house heating and computer functions, continues. The soil being removed is shifted to remove large rocks and debris and concrete from previous structures.
Trenches for sewer lines run north and south as Jacobsen ties lines to manhole on Center St. Two barrels of materials and two sump pumps have been found, tested, and removed from site.

June 1, 2010
Crowds crossed Main St to celebrate ground breaking for the new public library. Clouds cleared and rain dissipated in time for supporters to participate in this long awaited event. Councilmember Mark Packard greeted the group. Jim Weber spoke of the efforts of many who worked toward passage of a library bond of $9.8 million. Councilman Phil Bird shared his early experience of being banned from the library as a teen who broke the rules by playing chess in the library. Times have changed, Phil—we would now cheer you on.

Pam Vaughn, the library director, related several positive comments from patrons. Mayor Clyde had the children come to the front stating, “This is the reason we are building a new library.” He encouraged community members to open their hearts and wallets even wider so there will be funds to furnish the new building.

June 1 Groundbreaking Ceremony

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new library will be on June 1, 2010 at 3pm at the corner of Center and Main streets. The excavation will remain open , but protected, in preparation for digging the new library foundation. Eight contractors were selected, from a request for qualifications, to bid on the new facility. The construction bid will be awarded the first week in May.

Plans for the library and surrounding areas call for a modification of Hobble Creek. The west wall of the creek will be widened and lowered to create a better connection with the building, parking spaces will be increased, there will be more light in the building, and computers will be increased and divided into age-appropriate areas. The library has been carefully planned to make areas and items easy to find and navigate.

New Library Renderings 10/23/2009

These renderings are preliminary. Brick and other materials are subject to change. The building will feature brick and stone from local quarries. The building was designed from the inside out. Efficient and attractive interior spaces and ease of movement through the building were highest priorities. That and the overwhelming demand for many windows led to the current design. Here are some of the exciting features of this design:

As a response to popular demand, floor to ceiling windows on the east side of the building offering views of the creek and the mountains.

Comfortable seating in designated quiet areas placed near windows and other attractive areas.

Meeting rooms and adult spaces which are separate from children and teen areas.

Quiet, enclosed (but still visible) computer areas.

Round area on corner of Main St. and Center St. is children's reading area. This feature allows pedestrians outside the building to see the light, colors and activities happening inside the building.

The design intentionally brings natural light into the building while maintaining a connection to beautiful outdoor surroundings.

We invite your comments.
